SUMMER & AUTUMN CAMPS

The 2019 camp proved a great success.  We all had a wonderful time and were able to make full use of the good weather when it happened. Even the torrential rain didn't affect us as we were all in the tents at the time.

The following information will let any potential new comers know about the things we can see and do. Below is the information for this year's camp.

Camping at Grassington

Once again, I will be arranging camping near Grass Wood close to the village of Grassington in North Yorkshire. The date of the camp is as follows:  Saturday 21st August to Friday 27th August

Those children that have been before know all about the attractions of the Grassington area but for those who have not, the following information will give you an idea of what to expect. Children can come unaccompanied, which in the past has been the norm but parents are also very welcome to come. Over the years I have been blessed with mums and dads who have given sterling service to help make the camps run smoothly, though my own now adult children and past campers have also made a huge contribution.

Below is a description of the camps and the area in which we are staying:

Since 1975, I have been organising summer camps for children numbering up to about 30, latterly including my own grand children. The site is a field about a 5 minute walk from the banks of the river Wharfe, and one mile north of the village of Grassington. The river has a large, shallow area ideal for paddling and catching crayfish and nearby is a still, deep pool perfect for supervised swimming. Grass Wood is a large area of woodland just upstream from the site where the children can build dens and play all manner of chasing games It makes a spooky place to go for midnight walks, especially just after being told the (true) story of Black Tom and the appearance of his ghostly apparition in the wood. Some years we are able to sleep up in the woods on a ground sheet under the stars, if the weather is suitable.

Nearby Grassington is an attractive dales village with a diverse range of small shops and a dales museum set round its market place. On the moors above the village is a large open area at Yarnbury, making a good destination for a longer walk and a perfect place to go fossil hunting or for a game of Hare and Hounds. In the Town of Skipton, twenty minutes drive from Grassington, there is a swimming pool and an interesting castle as well as ‘Olde Worlde’ shops and a bustling marketplace.

Further afield is the town of Pateley Bridge with its playground & football pitch and nearby is Brimham Rocks,(www.brimhamrocks.co.uk) owned by the National Trust. This superb area of rock outcrops makes a wonderful place for children to enjoy themselves scrambling and climbing and is usually the most popular place we visit. Further a-field are Knaresborough, with its opportunity to go rowing on the river, and the ruins of Spofforth Castle.

Further places of interest in the area are Aysgarth Falls and West Burton Falls, Ingleton Falls Walk, Bolton Abbey, Malham Cove and Goredale Scar. In the event of wet weather, the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, The Museum of the Moving Image in Bradford or York National Railway Museum are well worth a visit. All these attractions are set in or around the Yorkshire Dales National Park with its superb scenery and the opportunities it offers for a variety of outdoor activities.

If the above list of attractions has whetted your appetite, your child(ren) (and willing adults) are most welcome to come along. Simply fill in the application form once you receive it and return it to me A.S.A.P. I will be providing all the equipment, though the children are very welcome to bring their own tent if they have one. There is a list that will give you an idea of what you will need to provide.

Washing kit (soap, flannel, toothbrush, etc)         Insect repellent (can be useful)

Lots of socks (preferably wool based)                  Plastic bags for used clothing, etc

Comfortable footwear suitable for low level walking, i.e. strong trainers.

You are very welcome to bring your own tent

I bring lots of folding chairs, but you can bring your own seat if you wish.

Don’t bother with the 3-legged stools as they are not suitable.

Spending money is left to your own discretion. Please remember that the safe keeping of money and

valuables such as cameras, iPods, etc must remain the responsibility of the owner.

The site offers great scope for water activities so dinghies will be welcome: similarly there is plenty of

space for football, baseball, etc, so by all means bring your own equipment.

On the day we go, you will need to have your own packed lunch. Please make sure you have taken any travel sickness tablets if necessary and that you have some for journeys whilst camping and for

the journey home.
